When the Northern War ended, the city became part of Poland. At the end of the XVIII century. the settlement becomes part of the Russian Empire and receives the name Libava. During this period, the port expanded, a fortress and a railway were built. Members of the imperial family and the Russian nobility often rest here. During the Great Patriotic War, Liepaja was occupied, and after the liberation it became part of Latvia.
