There is a popular legend tells that the name of the city comes from the name of a simple fisherman Vars, resident in these parts, who married the mermaid, whose name was Sava. Her image is still the symbol of Warsaw.
There is also an old legend that the city was founded by Prince Casimir, who got lost hunting in these parts, and came upon a dilapidated fisherman's hut, in which he saw a woman with two babies-twins. The Prince was the godfather for baby and generously awarded the father of the baby for the hospitality. Fisherman built by these means a large house, and soon beside him began to settle other fishermen. And so began the city of Warsaw.
The first documentary mention of the city date back to the XIV century. During its history, Warsaw has undergone many changes. During the Second world war the city was completely destroyed several times. Fascist invaders deliberately destroyed whole areas of the city, following his monstrous plan to reduce the population of the city more than thirty times.
Today in the Polish capital there are many places which appear before the eyes in its original form. Noteworthy among them are the symbol of Warsaw – the Old town, completely rebuilt after the Victory over Nazi Germany. In the list of UNESCO world heritage sites is the old Royal castle, which after the acquisition of the Warsaw status of the capital, became the official residence of the Polish government. The current appearance of the castle has a pentagonal layout, with three gates, the Central of them overlook the square and have the clock tower, whose height is about 16 meters. About this castle, go all sorts of superstitions and legends involving ghosts and alchemists. One of the characters is a creepy legends is the wife of Sigismund Augustus, which appeared in different years, before turning to Poland events.
The city has many lush palaces and Catholic churches. One of them is the Church of the Holy cross is famous because one of its chapels holds the ashes of the heart of Chopin.
Modern Warsaw is the largest political, economic, scientific, educational and cultural centre of Poland. Here are concentrated the intersection of Railways and highways. Warsaw is divided into seven administrative parts: Śródmieście, mokotów, Hunting, Will, Silobag, South and North of Prague.
