The history of the city begins in 1909, when a wooden pier was built on the banks of the Ob River, where the Waha River fell into it. Along with it were built several residential huts, which lived forest harvesters.
In 1924, the Nizhnevartovsky village council was opened. In 1964, the settlement was converted into a working village. So slowly this settlement would develop, if not for the teams of geological surveyors.
The beginning of the formation of the city began when a large oil field was discovered near Lake Samotlor. On May 29, 1965, the first fountain was hammered, and from that moment "Samotlor" and Nizhnevartovsk became inseparable. People from all over the country came here to conquer Siberia. The planned development of Nizhnevartovsk has begun. The place was very waterlogged, and the construction of the city was given very, very hard.
The only way connecting the Great Land with the village was the Ob River. It delivered food, building materials, equipment and mail. On the river navigation lasted only five months, workers had to work around the clock. Two months later, the first street of the city - Pioneer, which consisted of wooden houses was built.
On March 9, 1972, the village received the status of a city with the district subordination and administrative center of the Nizhnevartov district, which covers an area of 120,000 km2.
The river port of the city experienced its rebirth after 1909. Once a quiet pier turned into a large river port, where goods were delivered from many regions of the country. In 1980, a railway station was built, which is still considered the final one. In 1993, the first unit of the Nizhnevartskoye hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 800 megawatts was launched.
Nizhnevartovsk, like Surgut, is called the oil capital of Russia. Until the late 1980s, one in three tons of Russian oil was self-in-the-world. Until now, these two cities, like two brothers, compete in development and improvement.
In 2009, Nizhnevartovsk was recognized as the most comfortable city of Ugra.
