The city was founded during the First World War. The need for a railway linking Petrograd with the White and Barents Seas arose already in 1914, but only in 1915 its construction began. So, in a deserted area, the Medvezhya Gora station and a village near it arose. During the Civil War, the village was at the epicenter of the fighting, for some time it was occupied by the Anglo-American invaders. Further development of Medvezhya Gora is associated with the construction of the White Sea-Baltic Canal. It was in the village that the administrative apparatus of the construction site was located (including one of the labor camps). Since 1938, the village has been renamed Medvezhyegorsk, but the railway station still bears its historical name - Medvezhya Gora.
In December 1941, Mezhvezhyegorsk was again in the hands of the invaders: the city was occupied by Finnish troops (Germany's allies). They created a powerful defensive line in the area of the city, which the Red Army managed to break through only in June 1944.
In 1944-46 Medvezhyegorsk again turned into a grandiose construction site. Romanian prisoners of war and prisoners of labor camps were herded here to restore the Belomorkanal.
Despite its small size and relatively small age, the city of Medvezhyegorsk has several interesting objects that reflect the rich history of the city. Such objects include the station building (1916), the Belomorkanal administration building (1934), perfectly preserved Finnish fortifications of 1941-44 on Mount Lysukha, a memorial in the Sandarmokh tract, where mass executions of laborlag prisoners were carried out in the 1930s , several memorials-monuments to the soldiers of various wars, as well as the figure of a bear - the symbol of the city.
The city is surrounded by hills, forests and lakes, so not far from Medvezhyegorsk there are enough natural attractions: a waterfall on the Vichka River, caves and others. In the local history museum, where a significant part of the exposition presents the history of the Belomorkanal, there is a tourist information center offering excursions around the surroundings, in particular to the petroglyphs and sites of ancient people.
