Despite its importance, Severodvinsk is a relatively young city. Initially, it was a village of shipbuilders, which was founded in the 30s of the last century. It has been renamed many times. The current toponym appeared after the Victory, in 1957.

The spiritual center of Severodvinsk is the Nikolo-Korelsky Monastery.

It has an ancient history and remembers the events that took place several centuries before the founding of the city itself.
According to legend, the monastery was founded by Martha the posadnitsa from Novgorod, whose sons Anthony and Felix died on this site. The temple, which is part of the monastery complex, is active to this day. However, the rest of the monastery was closed almost simultaneously with the foundation of Severodvinsk.
In the old days, on the territory of the complex there was a school for children from neighboring settlements. The famous scientist Lomonosov also passed through these places on his hiking trip. During the same period, the monastery served as a place of exile. By the way, the same function was performed by local walls in the Soviet era. It was here that the infamous Yarinlag labor camp was located. Later, part of the shipbuilding industries were moved here.
