To reach the pass at Encumeada, one must travel west, moving high above the steep, wooded slopes.
Starting from the cave of Achada do Teixeira and moving along the path that leads to the top of Pico Ruivo, you can see various signs. They point to the following routes: PR 1 - Pico do Areeiro path leading to the 3rd highest peak of Madeira (1817 m); and PR 1.1 - Ilha Path, which descends to the summit of Pico Ruivo. The start of the trail to the Encumeade Pass begins a few meters above the peak of Pico Ruivo. Marked by frequent ascents and descents, the trail winds its way at an altitude of 1800 to 1000 m. Extremely beautiful landscapes await travelers as they cross two types of ecosystems: the Central Mountain Range and the Laurisilva Forest.
As you move along the Madeira Island trail, whose webcams allow you to enjoy picturesque views online, tourists move from the volcanic cliffs of the island, characteristic of climatic levels above 1400 m (alpine), to enveloping places covered with plants of the Laurisilva forest species.
Here you can find Madeiran laurels, laurels or laurel trees, lilies of the valley, endemic sea buckthorn, a very rare orchid and Mandona chrysanthemum.
Along the trail you can also find various caves dug into the rocks. For example, Furnada Lapada Cadela, which in former times served as a refuge for men. They often passed by and cut heather heather in these places. Then it was actively used to strengthen fences, and charcoal was also made.
Climbing the ridge, you need to reach the top of Boca das Torrinhas, from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the majestic valleys of Curral das Freiras. As you approach Encumeada, you get the feeling that you are in the very center of Maidera.
