The cozy fair town of San Candido is located in South Tyrol on the border with Austria (province of Alto Adige). The picturesque surroundings of the Puster Valley, the abundance of picturesque hotels, protected areas and the unique landscapes of the Dolomites make this place a popular tourist destination.
People come here to breathe in the fresh mountain air, take beautiful photos, get acquainted with local traditions and cuisine, which are already far from Italian and have shades of Austrian culture. In summer, a Historical Festival is held on the territory of the settlement, where you can see folk amusements, dances, songs and music.
In San Candido, German is the main language spoken. And the territory where San Candido is located today was inhabited by Illyrians even before our era. Later, the Celts lived here, followed by the Romans, who turned these lands into a military outpost.
The Romans founded the post of Littamum here. And those lands that today are the historical center developed around the monastery of Duke Tassilo III and Bishop Freising. The monastery was built for a defensive purpose, to repel the attacks of pagan tribes. Until the beginning of the 19th century, when feudal law was abolished, the territories of San Candido were part of the Freising principality.
Today, San Candido is a charming town with breathtaking surroundings. One of the main attractions is the old cathedral church, built in 1043 in the Romanesque style. The building replaced the Benedictine monastery that existed here earlier. The main decoration of the church is a massive square bell tower, inside of which a unique wooden crucifix and ancient frescoes are kept.
Another church on the territory of San Candido belongs to the Franciscan monastery. It was built in the 17th century and named after Saint Michel. The two chapels of Altotting and the Holy Crucifix, built in the Baroque style, date back to the 12th century.
Local hotels deserve special attention. They offer cozy rooms with unimaginable views from windows, terraces and balconies, delicious cuisine and excellent service. On the territory of one of them (Grand Hotel Wildbad) there are even healing sulfur springs, the water from which has been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times.
