The ancient, eventful history is reflected in almost every building. And the main value among them are, of course, ancient temples.
In total, there are more than 45 temple buildings on the territory of Pskov, a quarter of which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Of course, each of them can not be visited. But there are several Orthodox shrines that are worth seeing at least once.
Among the oldest temples in Pskov is the Church of St. Nicholas of Usokha.
It was built in 1535 on the site of a dried-up swamp. This is the reason for the unusual name of the shrine. The building has been restored many times. However, thanks to the efforts of specialists, many elements were preserved in their original form.
The temple was badly damaged during the Great Patriotic War. After the victory, the bell tower and roof were practically rebuilt.
An unusual story is connected with this temple. It is believed that when Ivan the Terrible passed by him, his horse was afraid of the bell chime. For this, the tsar ordered to chop off the bell's "ears" (top). In ancient times there was such a custom – to "punish" the bells for misdemeanors. The guilty bell could have had its "tongue" or "ears" cut off, or even smashed or sent to Siberia. Such a non-standard tradition could have come from the pagans, who also punished their idols for not wanting to fulfill their desires.
Almost two centuries earlier, another monument of cult architecture appeared in Pskov – the Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.
The original building was made of limestone slab. The material turned out to be short-lived. Therefore, at the end of the XVII century, the temple was rebuilt almost completely.
During the reign of the USSR, the church housed museum exhibits and archives. And after the end of the war with Nazi Germany, the temple was restored. The object was returned to the Orthodox only in the 90s.
The Church of St. Basil the Great on the Hill belongs to the same period. It was built of stone on the site of a dilapidated wooden predecessor in the XV century. The building was erected in record time. And a few years later, chapels and a gallery appeared here.
The original appearance of the temple has not been preserved to this day because of the huge damage that WWII brought. An aircraft bomb hit the main structure. But the bell tower, although it appeared 300 years later, was able to remain virtually unchanged.
