Zagrebfamous for its fascinating history and superb architecture extant from time immemorial. Also, the city has a huge number of cultural institutions – 20 theaters, 60 galleries, 40 museums of various subjects, and concert halls. The city was formed from two once existed in separate settlements, called Gradec and Kaptol, which in our day represent the historical centre of Zagreb. Its prosperity and rapid development of the city has favorable geographical position and local natural resources. In its history, the city repeatedly suffered serious defeat in the course of various military conflicts. Particularly devastating for the city were the middle Ages and the late twentieth century. However, most of the museums were soon rebuilt and the town was pleased with its splendor a huge number of tourists and lovers of beauty. In Zagreb has a mild climate, as the area of the city located in a river valley protected by mountains. The large number of attractions concentrated in the historical centre of Zagreb, the lower part of which is formed around the main city square ban Jelacic. In this part of town is dominated by eclectic architecture, as the building was going on here in different periods. Another famous area of Zagreb, is the square of Marshal Tito, which is the Croatian national theatre, city University, and the grandiose Cathedral of the assumption of the virgin Mary. In the upper part of the historic core of Zagreb's most attractive tourist sights are the Baroque Church of SV. Catherine's and the Episcopal Palace and the Church of SV. Mark and the remains of a medieval fortress – tower Lotrscak and city gates. Also of note are the numerous museums of Zagreb, among which especially prominent are the Museum of modern art, Museum of natural science, local history, archaeological, historical, ethnological and technical museums, and the famous Mimara Museum, presenting in its displays about 4,000 works of art. And, of course, a special flavor and unique atmosphere of Zagreb give countless cafes and restaurants with outdoor terraces, richly decorated with flowers, serves national dishes of Croatian cuisine as well as Mediterranean dishes and a wide assortment of great coffee.
