Live webcams Stykkisholmur online - cities of Iceland
Stykkisholmur webcams allow you to watch online one of the most picturesque places in Iceland. With a population of just over 1000 people. The city is the largest and most important on the peninsula. It is also one of the most beautiful places in Iceland and the most popular place to live on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Its location on the Breidafjordur Fjord, picturesque harbor and strikingly colorful houses win a place in the heart of every traveler.
Stykkisholmur is located on the Breidafjordur bay, which is famous for its beauty and wonderful wildlife, in the north of the Snaefellsnes peninsula.
One of the defining attractions are the old houses in the historic center of the city. One of them is the Norwegian House, built in 1832. It was the first timber-frame residence with two full-length floors in Iceland. The wood was imported from Norway, hence the name. Today Norwegian House serves as a regional museum with an open storage on the top floor and rotating exhibitions on the lower level, as well as a museum shop with crafts, sweets and products from the area.
The next interesting place can be called Helgafell or "Holy Mountain" - this is a small hill on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Its height is 73 meters, but it offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Breidafjordur bay. A small piece of wall remains on the top, dating from 1184, and was part of a nearby monastery built at that time.
Local legends say that if a person climbs a mountain for the first time, then he needs to go straight up, without looking back and without speaking, then he can make a wish and it will come true. Desires must be well-intentioned, and the wisher must not speak of them to anyone.

There is a temple of "Thor" here, which was built by Thorolfr Mostrarskegg, who is the first settler of this area. His biography is described in literary form with fictional and mythical elements in the saga "About Eirbyggya".
Above the Snæfellsnes mountain range rises the Kerlingarskarð or "Old Woman's Pass", which is 311 m high. The pass is named after the rock called Kerling. The legend says (and there is more than one version) that this troll woman was on her way to her lover. She was excited and didn't think about what time it was. When she arrived at the top of the cliff, she was still standing, illuminated by the first rays of the morning sun that hit her. After that, the troll turned to stone.
Another version claims that she fished in Baularvallarvatn. She caught a lot of trout and didn't want to stop. At the last minute, she tried to hurry back, but, unfortunately, she was too late. You can still see over your shoulder a line of trout on the mountain ridge at the northern end of the pass.
No less interesting will be Berserkjahraun - a 4000-year-old lava field located on the Snaefellsnes peninsula.
It covers the western part of Helgafel, between Stykkisholmur and Grundarfjordur. The name comes from one of the Icelandic sagas. It says a farmer brought two berserkers from Sweden to the peninsula. He later gave them to his brother Viga-Stir, who lived on the other side of the lava field. One of the Swedes fell in love with Vigi Stir's daughter and asked for her hand in marriage. Viga-Stear made a deal with the berserker, he could marry his daughter if two Swedes could clear a path through the lava field, connecting Viga-Stear's farm with his brother's farm. The feat was considered impossible, but the berserkers managed to do it pretty quickly. Instead of keeping his promise, Viga-Stir killed two Swedes and buried them next to the path. The lava field was formed after four craters erupted at short intervals about 4,000 years ago. Lava ran from the mountain slopes to the sea at Hraunsfjordur and Hraunsvik.
The basalt island of Sugandisey stands at the harbor itself and shelters the city from the north wind. Sugandisei is connected to the land by a road, so you can walk or drive along it, and then climb up the beautiful rock. Having risen to the top, you can relax on a bench and look at Stykkisholmur from a height. There is also a lighthouse on the mountain, which offers an even more attractive view. This lighthouse was once located in the Grotte in the city of Seltjarnarnes, which is part of the Greater Reykjavik area, but has been moved to Sugandisey.
Another unusual and colorful mountain is Drápuhlíðarfjall containing basalt, rhyolite and petrified tree trunks. Here you can see sulfur pebbles, jasper and other types of stones. For a long time it was believed that there was gold in the mountain, but very small reserves were found. Drápuhlíðarfjall is the most colorful and one of the most beautiful mountains in Iceland.
