Saint-Vith, whose webcams can be viewed online on this site, is a cozy Belgian town belonging to the German language community in the province of Liege.
The name of the city comes from the name of a saint revered by the German community.
This city was first mentioned in the XII century. That is why an inimitable atmosphere of antiquity reigns here, complemented by several examples of colorful German architecture and carefully preserved traditions.
St. Vith acquired its city status about 200 years after the date of foundation. Also, almost every 100 years, or even more often, the city suffered greatly and was destroyed due to fires.
Initially, the city belonged to Luxembourg. But after the defeat of Napoleon, it was transferred to Prussia. For a long time Sankt Vit was an important trade center in the region. This helped him gain the status of the city.
There are many tragic events in the history of Saint-Vith. One of the dark pages in the life of the city was also the period of World War II, when in 1944 the city was practically wiped off the face of the earth. Of all the houses, only nine survived. The thing is that the city played an important logistical and strategic role. The US army protected him from the Nazis. But in the end, she was forced to retreat. And after the German troops settled here, the American air force finally bombed the city, which had already been badly damaged from ground battles.
The restoration of Saint-Vith was carried out after the end of hostilities until the 60s. At that time, developers were not too worried about the aesthetics of buildings. It wasn't before. Therefore, mostly typical low-rise residential buildings have survived to this day. The style inherent in the German provinces can be found in the central part of Saint-Vit. From the pre-war buildings, a defensive tower has come down to our time, which was once part of the complex of city fortifications built in the 14th century.
Saint-Vith was annexed to Belgium in the second half of the last century. Today it is a significant center of trade, culture and tourism. There are also woodworking enterprises in the city. Residents of neighboring towns like to come here for shopping. After all, Saint-Vit is known for lower price tags.
Also, the town became famous also thanks to its natives. Among them are racers Bruno Thiry, as well as Thierry Neuville.
