However, these lands were inhabited long before that. Nomads have lived here for a long time. Artifacts were found on the territory of the city and its environs, indicating that the first people appeared here 10 thousand years ago. Such testimonies are the petroglyphs of the Stone Tomb.
Since the time of the Scythians, a huge number of burial mounds have remained on these lands, as well as the richest cultural and artistic heritage. So, for example, during the archaeological excavations of the famous Melitopol Scythian mound, a unique lining for a gorite was found, made of pure gold with reliefs on the theme of Greek myths. Along with him, despite the fact that the mound was plundered even before the foundation of the city, over 3,500 gold objects of various purposes were discovered at the site of the ancient grave. Other artifacts include bronze arrowheads, gold jewelry, and armor scales.

Melitopol itself appeared on the map at the time of Catherine II, who ordered the founding of the Tauride province with Melitopol and six more counties in its composition.

The first name of Melitopol is Novoaleksandrovskaya Sloboda. But by the middle of the 19th century, when it was fashionable to give Greek sound to place names, the city received its current name.
To this day, ancient buildings dating back to the century before last have survived on the streets of the city.
There are also many interesting cultural sites here. One of them is the Museum of the Locomotive Depot, which is also called the Museum of Military and Labor Glory. The exposition of the institution is striking in its diversity, and continues to expand to this day.

The institution was created on the initiative of caring people, scientists and cultural figures who collected the first collection literally bit by bit. The collection contains old archival photos of the park's arrangement, its architects and employees who worked in these territories. A special place in the collection is dedicated to the children's railway, from which, unfortunately, only the former Pionerskaya station has reached the present day, where today gymnasium No. 10 is located.
