Balaklava, whose webcams can be viewed online on this site, is known not only as a Crimean resort, but also as a strategically advantageous land and water area, which has been valuable from a military point of view at all times and eras.
Balaklava Bay was formed as a result of a tectonic fault. Its depth reaches 35 meters, and its width is about 400 meters. Such parameters create excellent conditions for the passage of ships. In addition, the entrance to the bay is located between two rocky capes that hide it from the sea. Such features were used by military leaders of different times to hide their fleet from enemy attacks. And this is what made it possible to create a secret base of nuclear submarines, which today has been turned into an underground museum complex.
During Soviet times, a military factory was located on the territory of the Submarine Museum, located in the thickness of Mount Tavros.
The depth of this place reached 126 meters below the surface of the earth. Today, during an excursion, museum visitors are given the opportunity to walk through underground labyrinths, the total length of which reaches almost a kilometer. Here you can see various workshops for the repair of submarines, a warehouse for storing torpedoes and nuclear warheads, a channel through which submarines descended into the sea.
Another interesting object related to the military history of the Crimea is the Genoese fortress of Chembalo. It was built in the XIV century and, although only small fragments of towers and walls have survived to this day, tourists can judge the former grandeur of this structure.
The object is located on the top of the Fortress Hill, from where a breathtaking panorama of the surroundings opens. A specially equipped staircase leads to the top from the side of the embankment. Therefore, getting to the historical monument will not be difficult.
Balaklava is also known for its embankments. The main one is named after Nazukin. It was founded at the end of the 19th century, when representatives of the nobility and bohemian society chose these places. Today, here you can enjoy stunning views of the marina and the bay itself, as well as visit one of the many restaurants serving the best fish and seafood dishes.
The second embankment of the resort is called Tavricheskaya. It passes through the western side of Balaklava Bay and is less popular than the main promenade. Nevertheless, walking along the Tavricheskaya embankment, you can enjoy the surrounding views in peace and tranquility, without getting into crowds of tourists scurrying back and forth. It is also from here that you can get to the Submarine Museum, see the old mansions of the 19th century and the yacht club.
For those who cannot yet go to the sea, Balaklava's webcams will help you move to the warm coast from anywhere in the country and the world.
