Viljandi is an ancient city in southern Estonia, located on the shore stretching more than 10 km of the lake. On the back side the town is surrounded by dense spruce forests. On the site of the modern city there was a settlement in the 5th century BC, which later morphed into the city. The first mention of Viljandi, as a city, belongs to the 11th century. In 1154 by Arabian geographer al-Idrisi for the first time struck Viljandi on the map of the world.
In the early 13th century these lands were conquered by the order of the sword began construction of a mighty fortress, the wooden structures were replaced with stone. For 200 years the fortress was completed and improved. In 1283 the Archbishop of Riga gave the surrounding fortress Fallin (the name in Viljandi wore until 1919), the settlement city status.
