Stykkisholmur is a city and municipality located in the western part of Iceland, in the northern part of the Snйfellsnes peninsula. It is the center of services and commerce in the area. Most people earn their living from fishing and tourism.
The settlement of Stykkisholmur was established as a trading platform in 1550. The convenient natural harbor easily accepted and accommodated any merchant ships, so many people began to flock here. Forty years later, over the trading city, a serious conflict began between the Hanseatic merchants from Bremen and the German count. All due to the fact that the Danish king sold both sides the exclusive right to trade. As a result of the "war", the territory, together with the harbor, was ceded to the Danish trade monopoly, which of course the deceived parties were not happy about.
After the monopoly was abolished in the 17th century, Icelandic traders and Danish merchants began to settle in the city en masse, who significantly developed trade. The city is actively developing and in 1838 the third pharmacy in the country was opened, and this is taking into account the fact that the city was not the largest in the country. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was decided to expand and improve the port so that it would meet modern standards, because it brings unprecedented profits for the country.
In 1928, the first plane landed on the peninsula and the first car passed through the streets of Stykkisholmur - an unprecedented event in those days. In the 1930s, a women's monastery was built in the city, at which a kindergarten and a pharmacy began to operate. The infrastructure is top notch.
