Mount Keilir is a hyaloclastite mountain, meaning it is made of angular glass rock formed by volcanic eruptions under the ice sheet. These rock formations can create dazzling shapes and colors. Keilir was formed during the last ice age, thanks to which the mountain acquired its characteristic cone-shaped appearance. Mount Keilir is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Icelandic authorities believe that volcanic eruptions are imminent. Most likely, the ejection of lava will occur from the Keilir and Fagradalsfjall volcanoes. If this does happen, it will be the first eruption in the Reykjanes area since the 12th century. But experts believe that the eruptions will not be strong and there will be no emissions of lava and ash into the air. Most likely, the lava will simply flow out slowly from the resulting cracks. This is the third highest level - red will only be set if the volcanic eruption really starts. Tracking of earthquakes on the peninsula was launched only in 1991 and this is the first time that tremors are recorded so often. With all this, the researchers are confident that there will be no catastrophe and people can safely continue their daily lives.
