The sculpture was erected on a 30-meter column in Freedom Square in memory of the patron saint of Georgia, St. George.
The height of the statue is 5 meters, the monument acts as the final part of the 33-meter monument. It is curious that it was after the appearance of this architectural landmark on the square that it was also renamed and named in honor of St. George, despite the fact that it had a different name for a long time before. It itself is quite old and was located in this place even during the Middle Ages, its original name was Caravanserai ("hotel square"), after which it changed its name many times.
Many townspeople strongly oppose the new structure, noting that the monument is too bulky and that its dimensions do not correspond to the architectural proportions of the old city. Some believe that the monument has spoiled the panorama of the old square and that its impressive size overshadows other ancient buildings of this place.
Nevertheless, the amazing monument continues to be a magnet for both locals and curious travelers strolling through the city. Not far from it are the city administration, the Bank of Georgia and the Pushkin Park, where those who wish can relax on the benches by the fountain.
