The strait is the natural border of the estuary, which lies between the lighthouse of Biryuchy Island and the sea coast near the villages of Genicheskaya Gorka and Schastlivtsevo.
The length of the Utlyuk estuary is about 60 km, and the width in some places reaches 5 km. The total area of the water area is 700 km2. And the maximum depth does not exceed 6-7 meters.
The variety of landscapes and flora have made this place attractive for birds, of which there are about 200 species. At the same time, 35 of the species recorded here are included in the Red Book of Ukraine.The underwater fauna of the estuary is also of interest. There are over 60 species of mollusks in the water, as well as about 40 species of fish, including the Red Book sturgeon, stellate sturgeon, goby and others.
Unfortunately, not all people who come to the estuary show a conscious and careful attitude towards nature. Every year the number of representatives of the local ichthyofauna decreases. The main reason is poaching, water pollution by agricultural and industrial enterprises, as well as unauthorized fishing.
The real treasure of the Utlyuk estuary is medicinal mud of sulphide silt origin.
