The oldest Orthodox church in the city is the Vvedenskaya Church, which is supposed to have been built in the 8th-9th centuries. Over time, the temple changed its appearance many times. The building acquired its present appearance in the 19th century. In those days, the building was significantly enlarged. An extension and a high bell tower were added to it. Unfortunately, the unique painting of the temple has not survived to this day. It was destroyed during the persecution of the church by the Bolsheviks. Today, here you can see a restored copy of an image that was created already in our century.The numerous Armenian churches of Feodosia are worthy of special attention. By the way, the famous native of this city, seascape painter I.K.Aivazovsky was an Armenian by origin.
One of the oldest Armenian religious buildings is Surb Sarkis
It originated in the XIV century and was rebuilt many times. Perhaps that is why the building has a complex layout of the interiors, which differ in height and area.Outwardly, the structure has a laconic appearance. Only the main entrance is decorated on top with Armenian crosses. It is noteworthy that this structure was completely destroyed and was restored at the expense of charitable funds, most of which were donated by Aivazovsky. In gratitude to the artist, a commemorative plaque was placed on the temple.
Another Armenian church, consecrated in honor of the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God, was erected in the XIII-XIV centuries on the territory of the Genoese fortress Kafa
Later, the building was given to the Orthodox parish.The temple consists of two parts that appeared at different times. In the older one, the loophole windows have survived to this day. The new extension has a lower height and a longer length. At the entrance you can see khachkars, and in the room there are cult paintings (fragments) that have been preserved here since the Armenian period.
