Helsinki, Finland, is the capital and largest city in the country. It is in the region of Uusimaa, located a city on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, Baltic sea. Helsinki has a population of over 500,000 people. Metropolitan area of Helsinki is 1.4 million people, making it the most populous municipality in urban area in Finland. Helsinki lies about 80 kilometers North of Tallinn, Estonia, 400 kilometres North-East of Stockholm, Sweden, and 300 kilometers West of St. Petersburg, Russia. Helsinki has close historical connections with these three cities and States. Helsinki is the major political, educational, financial, cultural and research centre in Finland and one of the largest cities in Northern Europe. Approximately 70% of foreign companies operating in Finland have opened their branches in this city. In 2012, Helsinki was chosen as the best city in the quality of the design architecture. In 2013, the city recognized as one of the expensive and attractive cities on the planet. The city was founded in 1550, its founder Gustav Vasa signed the decree on justification of the city, but the harbour in which was located the town was not convenient so the city was moved to what is now market square.
