The market along with the Barfüsserplatz and Stands, is a famous area of Basel. It is located directly in front of the Basel town hall in the centre of the city. The area was first mentioned in 1091.

Sometime before 1260, it was divided into two parts by a small river called Bersih (it. Birsig), which is the left tributary of the Rhine. Originally the area was called Kornmarkt, grain Market (it. Kornmarkt). Until the 15th century, it was traded in grain. Wine, vegetables, fruit, firewood, hay, eggs, butter, chickens and geese were sold at Stands. The market was surrounded by houses, on the first floor which houses retail shops. Through their Windows and inside stores local grocers were allowed to offer their products, such as boiled and fried meat, sausages, herring, venison, poultry, and cakes.

From the year 1290 is built on a street corner Sporergasse (it. Sporengasse) town hall also was the center of political life of the city. The Basel earthquake of 1356 destroyed the city hall together with all documents, and in its place built a new town hall. After joining Basel in 1501 the Swiss Union representative hall was replaced by a new building - part of today's town hall. Square, Kornmarkt was also a judgment seat.
