The history of crafts in Sarajevo, whose webcams are available on the site, is as old as the history of the city.

In well-known registers, this branch of the economy was first mentioned in 1489. At that time, handicrafts served the needs of the army. After almost 100 years, information appears about the application of this direction already in everyday life. At the end of the XIX century. in Sarajevo, there are 70 different craft areas, which allow the production of more than 400 items.
Artisans' workshops have always been divided into bazaars. Sarachi, for example, is located in the area of today's Sarachi Street, and near the Chekrekchine mosque in the city center there were a kasap, a sagrjiya (who made leather) and a blacksmith. In addition, artisans united in esnaf (organizations). Each guild had its own council and was completely independent of the others.
Crafts, like the main sectors of the economy, for several centuries of Sarajevo's existence, after the advent of industrial production, found themselves in a very difficult position.

Real-time webcams allow you to see urban landscapes.

Already at the zenith of the Ottoman period, some crafts are in a state of stagnation, due to the fact that students were not interested in learning. Fashion and lifestyle have changed, so some crafts are gradually disappearing.
To protect local artisans and prevent their disappearance, at the end of the 19th century. A workshop for artificial crafts and carpet weaving was founded. In 1905, a class was organized to train assistants and scientists in artificial work. In addition, since 1893, the Zanatli school operated, in which students learned various crafts.

By 1950, Sarajevo, which has live webcams, had a total of 742 stores, employing 1,196 craftsmen and 190 apprentices.

The private sector was still quite strong, and the new government sought to strengthen the cooperative sector and bring in a staff of craftsmen. Artisans to whom the state voluntarily transferred a workshop receive the status of craftsmen and the right to own a shop or perform any other work related to their craft. Despite this, ever larger and cheaper manufactured goods again threatened local craftsmen, so the Crafts Government was formed in order to preserve this branch of the economy. Over the years, many crafts have died out and today only the names of some streets and the names of families testify to them.
