The port of Kalamata is a small Bay with access to the sea, located a short distance from the city centre. The capital and main point of the Prefecture is praised by many Kalamata — the land of the Kalamatianos dance and the silk scarf, succulent black olives, honeyed figs and sprinkled with sesame sweet called pastelli. Above the town looms the castle of the XIII century, built by Geoffroy de Villehardouin. In the Northern part of the citadel there is a small Byzantine Church dedicated to the virgin of Kalamata (with a kind look), thanks to which, probably, the town got its name.
The best starting point for sightseeing Kalamata is the city's historical district, where guests can wander among the buildings, Dating from XIII century. Among them the Castle of Kalamata and the convent of St. Constantine and Helena.
Immediately before the historic district is located downtown. Aristomenous is the city's main street with the large square and plenty of shops and cafes. The city centre is the coastal area where the day scurrying bathers, and at night bars and clubs filled with young people. Navarinou street, to the East of the port is a "beach" for locals and city resort. Here at any time of the day or night you will find groups of people strolling by the sea.
