Kalamata has an ancient history, the countdown which began even in Homeric times, when the city was called Pharez. From XIII century the city was captured by the Franks, who built a fortress here and began the development of the city. In 1459 the city was captured by the Venetians and in 1715 it was under Turkish rule. Greek militia managed to free the city from the Turkish aggressor in 1821
