The institution was opened in October 1924 as a branch of the Kursk Provincial Museum. The first exposition was located on the territory of the Trinity Monastery. Unfortunately, the collection was almost completely plundered by the German fascist invaders during the occupation of the city.
But the activists were able to replenish the museum's exposition from scratch after the Victory. During this period, the exhibition was located at st. Frunze, 42. And since 1973, the funds were kept in the building of the Transfiguration Cathedral.
After the church was returned to the believers, the collection was to be moved to Popova Street, where a new building was built for the museum.
Today, during a visit to the institution, you can get acquainted with unique exhibits that tell about the nature, animals and plants of the Belgorod land, see artifacts that tell about the most ancient periods of history. Today the collection includes over 160 thousand items. In addition to various artifacts, the museum houses a large collection of popular science, periodicals, and local history literature.

Within its walls is kept the largest solid-woven cloth in Europe, which depicts scenes illustrating the key battle at the Kursk Bulge, which took place in the summer of 1943. The length of the image reaches 67 meters, and the height is 15 meters. In addition to the central exhibit, there is a cinema hall in the museum building, where you can watch a documentary film about the famous battle between Soviet and German troops. Next to an interestingly shaped, curved building of the institution, there is a spacious basement area, on which samples of Soviet military equipment from the Second World War are installed.
