It would seem - a typical Mediterranean town, of which there are many on this coast. However, having visited Oropesa del Mar, you are likely to change your mind about this resort.
Oropesa is located on the Costa del Azaar, 80 kilometers north of Valencia. The mountainous landscapes that surround the city on three sides contrast effectively with the seascapes and orange groves, which are especially beautiful during the flowering period.
The beaches of Oropesa del Mar are impressive in their diversity - from wide, many kilometers of sandy beaches in the north to small rocky coves, where sand alternates with pebbles, in the south. La Concha beach is a real center of leisure. He and Les Amplaries have been awarded the EEC Blue Flag for their perfect cleanliness and excellent service.
In Oropesa del Mar you can find hotels according to your needs - there are also five-star hotels, which is not quite typical for such small towns. You can also stay at a campsite or choose an apartment. The resort has about two hundred different bars, restaurants, tapas bars and cafes - some of them are open only during the season, but most of them receive customers throughout the year.
Oropesa is a very ancient city. Looking deep into its history, you can find traces of human presence here, starting from the Neolithic era. Many nationalities who visited the coast passed through it. However, the main events began to take place here at the time of the conquest of the settlement by the Arabs: they built a castle here, which is known today as one of the most important attractions, and received good income from the cultivated surrounding lands. In 1233, Jaime the Conqueror, king of Aragon, decided to take over the city. After that, Oropesa changed owners several times, until the city charter was finally adopted, which improved the situation of the inhabitants. Later, a number of other events took place, which seriously influenced the development of the city - Oropesa del Mar became one of those settlements that suffered the most from pirate raids. These attacks led to the fact that the fortress walls were extended around the city and watchtowers were erected (one of them has survived to this day in excellent condition, becoming a unique monument). The war of independence against Napoleon's army became a heroic episode in the history of the city - then Oropesa del Mar was still forced to surrender after several weeks of siege. It was during this war that the Moorish castle was destroyed. The city, whose economy has developed almost from the very beginning thanks to agriculture (orange, olive and almond trees, vineyards, vegetables were grown on arable land), today it lives mainly on the tourism business.
Some sights have been preserved in Oropesa del Mar since past times - the ruins of the Muslim castle Castillo de Oropesa, located in the upper part of the old city, the Torre del Rey tower, the Iglesia Virgen de la Paciencia church. There are unusual museums here - the Museum of Playing Cards, the Museum of Iron. And just a walk through the labyrinth of streets of the historical part of the city will be pleasant.
In addition to the monuments and interesting places of Oropesa itself, you can see the sights located nearby - for example, the castle in Peniscola or the famous Columbretes nature reserve. This is an island that is located about thirty kilometers from the city and bewitches with its unique beauty; in clear weather, you can see his silhouette on the horizon.
Oropesa del Mar is one of the best resorts for those traveling with children: in addition to comfortable beaches, you can visit the real city in the city - the Marina d'Or complex, where there is a wide variety of entertainment for children. However, everything is provided for those who like active rest: you can swim on catamarans or a jet ski, go kitesurfing and sport fishing, the city has a yacht club, a school for windsurfers, a diving center and, of course, the famous sports center of the Marina d'Or complex.
What is Oropesa del Mar? Nice cozy town with a well-developed infrastructure and its own ancient sights. Perhaps no better than some. But visiting it will forever remain in your memory as one of the most pleasant and joyful moments.
