Stavropoltranslates as "city of the cross". It is a small city in the South of Russia, founded as an Outpost off the coast of the river Tashla, which is also called "the Gate of Caucasus". In 1777 there was founded the fortress of Azov-Mozdok defensive line, the remains of the walls which keep the history of these lands and in our days. Modern Stavropol is a developed cultural, industrial, educational and administrative centre, with magnificent nature and many attractions. The city is a multiple winner in the nomination "the Most comfortable urban settlement of Russia". Despite the relatively warm climate, hilly terrain and steppe zone suggest the presence of constant winds. Stavropol is administratively divided into several districts. In the Central part of the city are administrative, educational and cultural institutions, parks and commercial enterprises. In the Leninsky district, located in the southern part of the city, and also in the area in the North-West of Stavropol, is dominated by the sleeping quarters, schools, kindergartens and other social infrastructure. Also in town is the private sector, the military camp and several other neighborhoods. The city has many monumental and architectural monuments, temples, museums and beautiful natural areas. Monuments of Stavropol presented the memorials to the victims of the great Patriotic and Civil war – a Cold spring and a memorial of Eternal Glory. Most interesting monument is a sculpture of the guardian angel of the city, erected on 25-metre obelisk, and became a symbol of Stavropol. Special attention deserves the Serf mount, the historical centre of the city, where the monuments, the eternal flame, the remnants of the fortress wall, the majestic Cathedral of the mother of God, as well as an observation deck, which offers superb view of the city, the City and the Taman forest. Beautiful building of the XIX century are the Tiflis gate or triumphal arch. Among the churches of Stavropol it should be noted one of the main religious buildings of the city – the beautiful St. Andrew's Cathedral, Cathedral of the assumption of the Mother of God, and a Muslim Mosque. The city has some great historic museums of local history, Art, War, and the pharmacy Museum. Special splendor have city parks and the outskirts of Stavropol.
