The temple was built in the mid XVI century by decree of Ivan the terrible was called Pokrovsky. The original name was chosen in honor of the feast day of the Intercession of the Mother of God, when it was defeated the khanate of Kazan. However, 20 years later, after the construction of the main part of the temple, next to it there was a chapel, where was laid the relics of the Holy fool Basil, who was said to have feared the king himself. One of the most recognizable landmarks in red square is the Spasskaya tower, one of the 20 Kremlin towers, which is also one of the symbols of Moscow and the whole country. In the beginning of XVI century, over the gate of the tower was installed, the miraculous icon of Christ the Savior.
