Brussels Bruxelles, Niederl. Brussel is one of the oldest European capitals. The founder is considered to be Saint Hagerik - on his initiative on this place in the beginning of the 7th century settled a community of monastic brothers, around which the future Brussels. The name of the city comes from two Old-American words "bruoc" (swamp) and "sella" (settlement), that is, "settlement on a swamp." The first written mention of it dates back to 695.

The growth of Brussels was extremely slow: in the middle of the 13th century it had only 10,000 inhabitants. This was primarily due to the poor geographical location. The situation changed in 1430, when Philip III the Good moved the capital of Burgundy to Brussels. The Duke's residence made the city attractive to nobles who built mansions and houses, increased the demand for goods and services, which led to an influx of labor. At the beginning of the 16th century, the number of inhabitants increased to 45,000.

The most important event that determined the future prosperity of Brussels was the construction in the mid-16th century of a shipping channel, which opened a direct access to the sea. Trade began to develop rapidly. The bicentennial of the Dutch East India Company, whose ships were regularly serviced in the city port, provided economic growth, was particularly successful.

In 1830, Brussels became the capital of Belgium, a newly formed kingdom separated from the Netherlands. It is the absence of a nation state and the status of the capital that explains the fact that, being founded in the 7th century, Brussels has a small number of historical attractions.

The peculiarity of the architecture of the historical center of the city is the result of the wide use of such styles as Brabant Gothic, Flemish Baroque and Art Nouveau (modern).

A characteristic feature of the Brabant Gothic is that the building material used soft Brabant limestone, easily processing, which allowed to create delicate elements. Brabant Gothic makes classical Gothic compositions more refined and refined. In addition, the light Brabant limestone does not darken under the influence of time, giving the buildings a particularly noble look. The best architectural monuments of this style are the Brussels Town Hall and the Cathedral of Saint-Michel-e-Gudul.

The appearance of Brussels was also influenced by the Flemish Baroque, which was widespread in the Nordic countries in the 16th and 18th centuries. This style is a combination of strict, elongated and pointed Gothic forms with baroque pomp and its special attention to decorative elements. The most striking Flemish style is on Grand Place, the city's main square, which is surrounded by 29 houses of various trade and craft guilds. Nowadays you can see the former houses of guilds of painters, bakers, tailors, silk merchants, butchers, boatmen, bondmen and others.

Brussels played a huge role in the formation and formation of the Art Nouveau (Modern) style, which was born at the end of the 19th century. Today, the city has about 900 buildings in this style, which are characterized by curved lines and the lack of straight corners, stylized plant patterns, the union of man with nature, the chanting of female beauty as the basis of the universe. One of the pioneers of Art Nouveau style in architecture was Victor Horta, who lived in Brussels for a long time. His most famous works are the mansions of Tassel, Solve, Etvelde, as well as the architect's own house, where his museum is now located.

A unique attraction in Brussels - graffiti comics on the walls of houses. Comics - a real pride of Belgium, formed in a separate form of literature and art. The main Belgian comic is considered the adventures of a young newspaper reporter Tintin and his dog Snowy (Mila), first published in 1929. Their author is a Brussels self-taught artist Georges Remy under the pseudonym Erge. French-Belgian comic book characters such as Smurfs, Asterix and Obelix are also popular.

Speaking of Brussels, it is impossible not to mention the world-famous confectionery waffles. This delicacy originally appeared in the Dutch part of Belgium. There are two types of Belgian waffles: Liege and Brussels. Unlike Liege waffles (their recipe includes a large amount of sugar, which in the process of baking caramelizes inside the waffle and makes it firmer), Brussels is more airy and soft. Also, Liege waffles can be eaten both hot and cold, and they are usually oval or round. Brussels waffles are recommended to be hot, and their form is traditionally rectangular.
