Online webcams Blankenberge - North Sea coast

You can watch webcams of Blankenberge online to enjoy the views of the Belgian town. It is one of the most popular coastal cities in the country with a long beach and promenade. It can be compared to Scheveningen in the Netherlands. Two dams that were built here around 1100 attracted fishermen who settled in the area between them. This settlement later grew up in Blankenberge. In the 19th century the British brought seaside tourism to the Belgian coast, and the popularity of this place grew steadily. But tourism really took off even more after the completion of the railway line between Blankenberge and Bruges in 1863.

The main attraction is the pier, which has a rich history and has now become a national heritage site.

This unique structure - a 350-meter bridge in the sea - is popular. Nowhere else is there such a confrontation with the ebb and flow of the North Sea as at the Belgian Pier. The very first pier appeared here in 1894. During the First World War, the Germans burned it down. A new concrete pier appeared in 1933 and underwent a thorough renovation in 2003. Here you can enjoy breathtaking views of the coast and the sea in all directions.
You should definitely visit the tourist center Witkerkse Polder. It is located on the edge of a nature reserve, a stone's throw from the Witkerke Church and is the ideal starting point for walking or cycling. The main places of this natural center are two reserves. The first one is the Witkerkse Polder with an area of more than 100 hectares. It is spread over the territories of Blankenberge, Wenduin, Neumünster and Zuyenkerk in the province of West Flanders. There is also a grassland bird sanctuary, considered the most important bird destination in Flanders. Both in summer and winter there is an opportunity to see rare birds. The second protected area is Fontaintjes. The average area is from 10 to 50 hectares. This is an elongated dune area with lakes and wet meadows. The area lies between Blankenberge and Zeebrugge on one side, and the sea and coastal airstrip on the other.

Blankenberge has a great legacy from the Belle Epoque period (1870-1914). Right in the centre, in the area around Sint Rochuskerk, you can find the Belle Epoque Center.

Three villas dating back to 1894 have been restored and today form the Belle Epoque Center, a single interactive experience house.
As a result of the industrial revolution, along with the old nobility, a new industrial and commercial bourgeoisie arose. At the end of the XVIII century. the attractiveness of the sea was discovered and soon the resorts caused a sensation. The construction of railway networks has been the impetus for real population movements during the tourist season. These wealthy tourists wanted comfortable accommodations, bath amenities, and ample opportunities for recreation.
The bathing culture demanded bathhouse architecture, and in addition to luxury hotels, coastal villas became popular. So, Blankenberge turned into an important seaside resort with a casino, a pier, coastal villas.
At the Belle Epoque Center, you can immerse yourself in the carefree and festive atmosphere that the city exuded at the time. The interactive exhibition tells fascinating stories accompanied by posters, postcards, photographs and film footage. It's also ideally located within walking distance of the train station and a stone's throw from the North Sea, so you won't miss it.
It is definitely worth going to the information point, where you can take excursions along various walking routes that allow you to see the most beautiful places in the city.
