Live webcams Heimei - Island in Iceland online
Heimei webcams that you can watch online on this site allow you to look at the beauty of this picturesque island. It is the main place to see when visiting Vestmannaeyjar or the Westman Islands. The Westman Islands are an archipelago of 15 islands and some rock stacks that were formed about 11,000 years ago. Sometimes referred to as the "Pearl in the Ocean", Vestmannaeyjar has also been described as the "Capri of the North" due to the many sea caves found there, a feature similar to the famous Mediterranean caves of the island of Capri.
Heimei is the largest and only inhabited of the Westman Islands.
This is a fun and vibrant place that attracts travelers all year round. Six other larger islands have solitary hunting lodges, and some of these are visible from Heimei. The landscapes of the island are amazingly beautiful. From the volcanic landscape and moss-covered cliffs to quaint houses and colorful rooftops, this place is sure to warm your heart.
The Westman Islands were formed by underwater eruptions 10-20 thousand years ago. The last volcanic eruption occurred on January 23, 1973, when a previously unknown fissure under Heimei opened less than a mile from the city. A 1,600 m long fissure crossed the island from shore to shore, and within two days a cone called Eldfell or "Fire Mountain" rose more than 100 meters above sea level. The eruption lasted almost 5 months, but miraculously no one died.

It is quite small, although it is the largest island off the coastline of Iceland. Almost everything is within walking distance of the city centre. The island is only about 6 km long. Here you can find steep cliffs in the north of the peninsula, while grassy plains are located on the south coast.
The island has many natural attractions. Heimaklettur rock, located to the northeast of the city, is a good place to watch sea birds. Also called "Home Rock", it is the largest in the jumble of rocks that wrap around the harbour. It is also the highest mountain on the island. Its height is 279 meters. Considered a defining landmark, its bulky shape is visible from every corner of the city. She can look a little intimidating and seem inaccessible. However, a hiking trail will take you to the top, and ladders and ropes will help you climb the steeper sections. At the top there will be a real reward - a beautiful view of the island, the archipelago and the mainland.
Eldfell and Helgafell, sometimes called twin volcanoes, are also close to the city.
They can be reached via a dozen or more trails and are not too steep. Colorful Eldfell is the easiest point to hike and a mountain that every hiker should climb. It has a height of just over 200 meters. A walk along one of the trails to the top takes no more than 15 minutes. Eldfell was formed during a volcanic eruption in 1973. The richness of the scenery and the amazing red colors of the rocks at the top make it worth climbing. Here you can see fumaroles with yellow sulfur crusts and sparkling with thousands of microcrystals. Directly southwest of Eldfell is a similar volcanic cone called Helgafell. It is slightly taller and about 5,000 years older. For a long time it was the main volcano on the island. Helgafell has a small heart-shaped crater in the center. The trail can be somewhat difficult in some parts due to its steepness and loose gravel patches along the way, but it doesn't take long to climb up and is well worth the effort.

Herjolfsdalur is a beautiful green valley. It looks like a giant natural amphitheater with stunning rocks rising from all sides. The valley is a 10,000-year-old collapsed volcanic crater named after the first settler of the island, Herjolfur Bardarson. In the valley is the turf estate Herjólfsbær, which was built as a recreational center for Herjolfur's house. The cliffs above the small jagged bay on the western side of the meadow are a good place to seek solitude in the summer. If you have extra time, you can walk along the footpath that leads south from Herjolfsdalur along the west coast of the island. Every year it hosts a larger three-day event called the "National Festival". Thousands of locals and visitors gather for various programs including big stage concerts, bonfires, fireworks and folk singing. It was first held in 1874 and became the largest multi-day festival in Iceland.
