Live webcams Hefn online - city and community in Iceland

Höfn webcams can be watched online to enjoy the natural beauty of the Icelandic community. After driving through the deserted south coast or the sparsely populated areas in the Eastfjords, arriving in Höfn is truly like entering a metropolis. Therefore, the city is quite an important hub for tourists who travel along Iceland's ring road. However, it is a small town with hardly more than 2,200 inhabitants.

Irish monks are believed to have lived in the area before the Vikings arrived around 870 AD.

Later, a farm was founded, owned by one of the first Vikings to settle in Iceland. It was located a little to the east of where the city stands today, in an area called Horn, which means "horn" in translation.
People actually started settling in Chefn less than two centuries ago, they came to work in the fishing industry. It officially became a city in 1988. Valuable Norwegian lobster and the Icelandic catch of this marine life are now landed and processed in Höfn, making it Iceland's lobster capital. Today, thanks to the growing number of fisheries and tourism, the city is thriving.
Chefn literally translates as a harbor. Sitting on the shores of the absolutely breathtaking Hornafjordur, in the shadow of the largest ice cap in Europe, the majestic Vatnajökull is simply magical. At the same time, Hornafjordur is actually not a fjord, but a large freshwater lagoon formed by sediments left by powerful glacial rivers.

Hefn webcams make it possible to watch online and take a walk through picturesque places.

There is something to see here. Charming harbor with its colorful boats. Nearby is a footpath that leads to a bird sanctuary south of the harbour. Gamlabud or "Old Shop" is a folk museum housed in one of the oldest houses in Höfn. This popular museum is dedicated to the history of one of the most isolated parts of Iceland. It displays a collection related to the life of local people in the old Icelandic farming communities, covering the period between 1850-1950.
The Hornafjordur Art Museum is a small gallery that hosts exhibitions of the municipal art collection and contemporary local artists, mainly the work of Svavar Gudnason. There is also the Huldusteinn Stone Museum. A private collection of various Icelandic stones displayed in the old Höfn pool. It is absolutely recommended for geology enthusiasts.
Many interesting places can be found in the vicinity. With a beautiful yellow lighthouse and the picturesque Eistrahorn nearby, the Hvalnes nature reserve is a must-see. The black sand beach stretches for several kilometers, images of the surrounding mountains are reflected in the water on calm days.
The mountain peaks of Stokksnes and Vestrahorn, located on the other side of the bay, have no less breathtaking beauty. Surrounded by grassy black sand dunes, they are the perfect backdrop for amateur and professional photographers alike.

The Hoffelschekull is one of the closest glacier tongues to Höfn, located about 25 km from the city.

There are several good and short trails in the area, as well as longer hiking trails with excellent panoramic views of this glacier tongue that flows into a small lake.
Flajekull glacier is another nearby glacier tongue, about 30 km from the city. An excellent hiking trail leads from the parking lot to this glacial tongue. Equally impressive are the Diamond Beach, Jekulsarlon (cave) and the Breid-Amerkurjokull glacier located about 80 km from Höfn. The source of these monumental ice blocks is the tongue of a glacier called Breidamerkurjokull. It hides a unique treasure - the Crystal Ice Cave, which can be visited from November to March. At the same time, there is a lagoon with marine life and Diamond Beach nearby, which are available for visiting all year round.
There are traditional holidays in these parts that immerse you in Icelandic life. For example, Orrablot is a mid-winter festival. The name refers to the old month of Orri, which, according to the old Icelandic calendar, lasted from mid-January to mid-February. The festival is usually held from 19 to 26 January. This is one of the most popular events here.

Hebn webcams can be viewed online on the website.
