Debrecen was the largest Hungarian city in the 18th century, is sometimes described as one of the most important cultural centres of Hungary. The town was first mentioned under the name "Debrezun" in 1235. The name comes from the Turkic word "debresin", which means "alive" or "movement", and it is also a male name. Another theory States that the name Debrecen, entirely Slavic origin. As a settlement, the town was founded in honor of the Hungarian conquest. Debrecen became more important after some small Mongol invasions on Europe. The city has experienced rapid development from the mid-13th century. Mainly due to the base of the prestigious Calvinist College, founded in 1538, Debrecen has since become the intellectual and cultural center of Europe. Over the centuries the College was transformed into University. In 1949-1950 several departments of the University were closed in connection with the coming to power of the Communists. The University has many departments and is a major research centre in Europe. Town are also home of many famous people, actress Louise Blaha, Endre ady, Gyula Krudy, etc.
