TOP-5 ancient fortresses in Russia. Part 2
Many people associate ancient stone fortresses with tales of knights, princesses and mystical dragons. These are the associations that the fortress built in Veliky Novgorod evokes.
The building was erected on a high hill in the 11th century during the reign of the son of Yaroslav the Wise. The original building was made of wood. After 3 centuries, the fortress was rebuilt in stone and became the first red brick fortification in Russia.
It is noteworthy that it was here that the battle between the army of Alexander Nevsky and the Swedish troops began.
Today the fortress is a unique tourist complex. Guests of the museum-reserve can contemplate the amazing temple, which impresses with its scale and monumentality, as well as the stunning Millennium of Russia monument. The old bell tower is also of interest. The Novgorodsky Detinets complex is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Another amazing fort was built in Dagestan and was named Derbent fortress.
The building, perfectly preserved to our time, is a string of city fortifications, as well as the oldest citadel in Russia, Naryn-Kala. The name of the object is translated from Persian as "Sun Fortress". Many experts translate this word as "delicate" or "beautiful" fortress.
The structure was erected in the 6th century to protect the Transcaucasian lands and the territories of Western Asia from northern nomads.
Among the most outstanding elements of the Derbent fortress are the central gate, the prison, which deepens by 11 meters, as well as baths, the residence of the khan and the oldest church in the state.
The fortification is surrounded by picturesque mountains and the sea. Such a background creates an indescribable atmosphere and the feeling that all this has come off the canvas of a brilliant artist.
Derbent fortress is one of the largest in the world and is also protected by UNESCO. Archaeological research on the territory of the complex continues to this day.
