TOP-5 ancient fortresses in Russia. Part 1
Of course, the original defense purpose of many of the Russian fortresses that have survived to this day has been lost. But, nevertheless, even in peacetime, these structures are able to conquer the imagination with their power and grandeur.
Among the fortresses that have survived to this day, it is worth noting the Pskov Krom. Today it is one of the symbols of Pskov and has the most important cultural and historical significance for the entire region.
The building was erected in the XIII century and was one of the most powerful fortifications of that time in Europe. Today you can see the vast territory of the fortress. It is surrounded by 5 belts of fortifications, the total length of which reaches 9 km. Previously, 40 towers and 14 gates were built to defend the city. The Kremlin and temple buildings on its territory have survived to this day.
The Trinity Cathedral in Pskov has a special splendor. The highlight of its design is the bell tower. On the territory of the fortress, you can take unique photos, as well as learn many interesting historical facts by examining the archaeological exposition.
In addition to excursions, guests of the reserve are offered interactive lectures on the life and culture of the ancient inhabitants of the city.
Another worthy example of fortress architecture is the Ivangorod Fortress, located in the Leningrad Region. The building bears the name of Grand Duke Ivan III. It was founded at the end of the 15th century on the top of the Maiden Mountain, which hangs over the Narva River.
It is noteworthy that the structure was built in a record 7 weeks. Its main purpose is to protect the Novgorod land from invasions from the west.
One of the features of the fortification is its powerful walls. The fortress has been perfectly preserved to this day and is an outstanding monument of medieval architecture.
In addition to its direct defensive functions, the Ivangorod fortress was a haven for the Russian pirate squadron.
The most severe damage to the fortress occurred during the Great Patriotic War. However, thanks to the efforts of engineers and reenactors, it was possible to carry this structure through the centuries and to this day amaze the beholder with its grandeur.
When visiting the Ivangorod Fortress, you must take your passport with you. After all, the object is located on the border area with Estonia.
