Thailand launches total surveillance app for tourists
Thailand Plus is a mobile utility that allows law enforcement agencies to track the movement of tourists and their contacts with sick people. The device of the program strongly resembles the shocking "Social Monitoring", which they tried to impose on the residents of Moscow in the spring of 2020. With its help, fines were issued to everyone who tried to leave their home without permission.
It is envisaged that foreign guests who want to come to the Kingdom will have to download a mobile application in advance and use it during the entire holiday. The main goal of the program is to notify travelers of direct contacts with confirmed coronavirus infections, officials said. However, most experts are inclined to believe that the most important purpose of software is total surveillance.
The requirements for travelers are too strict, which, to some extent, violate their personal freedom. The only way to get into the country is through social monitoring. During the entire rest, the application must be turned on in the background. The utility requires access to GPS data. When moving, travelers are required to register at each new location by scanning QR codes. In addition, all tourists must upload their photo, the number of the certificate of entry and the certificate from the Thai embassy into the program.
The Ministry of Tourism assures that the data obtained will be used only to prevent new foci of infection. No one is going to violate the privacy rights of vacationers. The government refers to the fact that such solutions are being implemented by other states and are definitely beneficial. But what kind of comfortable rest can we talk about with the understanding that your every step is monitored, whether you want it or not.
A similar application has already been used for local residents. They are also required to register QR codes to track movements. Many Thais are unhappy with the state of affairs and are concerned about the privacy of their personal data.
