Kostroma in fairy tales, houses and persons. What to see at the family nest of the Russian tsars
In the heart of Kostroma there is a square named after the famous peasant who led the Polish-Lithuanian soldiers in the swamps - Ivan Susanin. In the center of the square stands a monument to the national hero who lived in the Kostroma region.
The square is surrounded by various historical buildings, including a stone tower, built in the antique style. Today it houses the exposition of the Fire Museum.
Such architectural monuments are nearby: the building of the Noble Assembly, the Epiphany-Anastasia monastery, the houses of Borshchov and Botnikov, the Durygin estate.
Near Susaninskaya Square - another historical object - stone malls, which in the old days diverged for several quarters. Today, here, as before, commercial activity is conducted. Shops and cafes are open. And instead of fish rows, there is an art gallery and studios where they teach fine art.
Trading lines grew gradually, starting in 1789. At first, the Reds appeared, where fabrics and fur were sold. Then the "Big flour", next to which there was one of the oldest temples of the Kostroma land - the Savior in the Rows. This whole architectural ensemble looks so harmonious that it inspired the director of the cult film "Cruel Romance" to shoot an episode of the meeting between Paratov and the Roma in this place.
Although the city lacks a full-fledged embankment, as in other settlements near the Volga, on the shore, near the center, there is a landscaped area for walking and relaxing. It is paved with paving slabs, equipped with flashlights, benches. On the lower tier, separated by a wrought-iron fence, is the city beach, with “dressing rooms” and a volleyball net.
Nearby are the front gates to enter the city from the river. Cruise ships come here in the summer months. And from the rotunda of Ostrovsky a stunning view of the water surface and the city panorama opens. You can also see Kostroma from a height by visiting the observation deck in Central Park nearby.
Picturesque streets rise from the coastal zone to the central part of the city, with old wooden and stone houses, abundant green spaces. The most famous of them
The Milk Mountain, known as the Milk Traders, who gathered here every morning.
Here, in Kostroma, the Ipatiev Monastery is located, the fate of which is forever connected with the last dynasty of Russian tsars. It was here that the heir Mikhail Romanov lived and was called to the throne. Since that time, each subsequent ruler visited the monastery, presenting various gifts. 4 years before the Revolution, the 300th anniversary of the dynasty was celebrated here. The monastery complex includes several temples and other buildings. Among them, we especially revere the Trinity Cathedral, in which the ancient paintings of the 17th century have been preserved.
Near the monastery - another iconic place - "Kostroma Sloboda", which is a museum of Russian wooden architecture. And not far from the center - Snegurochka’s tower, which hosts thematic performances. In the tower of the granddaughter of Santa Claus, you can see the magic mirror and feather bed. They say that if you beat it well, somewhere on Earth snow begins.
