Georgievskaya Street is located next to the Golden Gate in the very center of Vladimir. Previously, this street was the heart of the New City, here in the 12th century the courtyard of Prince Yury Dolgoruky was located. He also founded the white stone church in honor of St. George. According to some historians, the street got its name from it.
In the 18th century, a strong fire destroyed part of the street buildings, and the church did not survive either. In its place at the end of the eighteenth century, a new baroque style was erected; it has survived to the present day.
Years passed and the street changed its appearance. For a while, another name appeared - “Red Profintern”. But soon the usual Georgievskaya again returned to the maps of the city.
According to the architectural plan, the restoration of 1986 restored the view of the street of the 19th century - fragments of cobblestone pavement and ancient lanterns were updated.
And in 2015, St. George found a rebirth. On the City Day, a pedestrian zone and new viewing platforms opened. At one of them, you can find a monument to the artist - a reminder of the talented masters of the Vladimir school of painting. A good omen was to stroke the beak of a bird sitting on the ease of the artist and as if watching the creation of the urban landscape.
On the street, there are many buildings in the 18th century. An old two-story building, next to the St. George Church, formerly belonged to the city governor, in 1805 the first city pharmacy was founded there. Near it is located a monument to the pharmacist. By tradition, you need to rub his nose and bald spot - for good health.
Sculptures on Georgievskaya Street were created by the famous Vladimir sculptor, a member of the Union of Artists - Igor Chernoglazov.
Next to the pharmacy in the old merchant's house is located the House of Folklore of the Regional Center of Folk Art. It constantly hosts a variety of exhibitions and master classes, under the guidance of experienced craftsmen. And in the next building - the House of Folk Craftsmen, everyone there will be able to learn about the crafts of the Vladimir region.
For the St. George's Church, next to the second-hand bookstore, the antiquarian bazaar of the day off “Shalopayevka” began to work - earlier this was the name of the area from the Golden Gate to the Cathedral Square. There you can find old coins, icons, and household items.
Georgievskaya Street claims the title of “Vladimir Arbat” with a local flavor. On weekends, concerts, performances, master classes, quizzes and excursions from the best teams of the city and region are held as part of the art project “Georgievskaya Street Art”.
In September 2016, after reconstruction, another pedestrian part was opened, connecting Georgiyevskaya Street with Spassky Hill. Now tourists are not hampered by transportation while walking you can sit and rest on numerous benches. By the Day of the city, new sculptural compositions by Igor Chernoglazov were presented. First of all, it is an interactive monument to a firefighter, which was installed next to the oldest in Vladimir, which appeared two centuries ago, but the fire part that still functions today. In the warm season, with the help of a hand pump, passers-by on Georgievskaya Street will be able to bring the sculpture into action: water begins to gush out of the hose. In addition, the sculptural composition of the boy-shallop is open, and in front of him is a painter who looks out from behind a theatrical bollard. New art objects enlivened the pedestrian route and formed a very colorful and picturesque corner of the city. Take pictures and enjoy the transformation of the city with us!
