An online webcam broadcasts from the outskirts of the city of Stykkishólmur in Iceland.
A large marina with ships moored along the berths falls into the lens. Here you can also see the port building, shops, parking lots, outbuildings and hotels. Behind you can see a stunning sea panorama. The broadcast is transmitted in real time.
Stykkisholmur, whose webcams can be viewed online, is a city and community located in the western part of Iceland, in the northern part of the Snaefellsnes peninsula.
The city belongs to the southern shore of the Brady Fjord and is an important shipping and transport center.
The name of the city was given due to the proximity of the Stakkid skerries. A little over 1000 people live here. But due to tourists, this figure can fluctuate.
Like many cities in Iceland, Stykkisholmur grew out of a small settlement that appeared in the middle of the 16th century. Initially, it was an important trading hub. This city owes its development to a convenient harbor, which attracted merchants from Denmark and Germany. By the way, convenience for navigation and trade has repeatedly become the cause of conflicts between countries. So at the end of the 16th century, a scandal arose between the Bremen merchants and the Count of Oldenburg because of the exclusive right to trade in Stykkisholmur given by the King of Denmark.
With the advent of the Danish monopoly, immigrants from Malmö, which at that time also belonged to Denmark, began to trade here.
In the 18th century, only the Danish crown had the right to trade in Stykkishólmur. But by the end of that century, everything had changed. The Danish monopoly was abolished, so Icelandic merchants began to appear in the city.
Stykkisholmur saw its heyday in the 19th century. A pharmacy was opened here (by the way, only three such facilities were open in Iceland at that time), the port was enlarged and reconstructed.
Almost 100 years later, the first plane landed in Stykkisholmur, and the first cars appeared on the streets of the city. At the same time, a Franciscan nunnery was founded in the city, at which a hospital and a kindergarten were built.
To this day, Stykkisholmur has preserved old buildings. It can be seen by walking through the historical center. You can learn more facts about the history and nature of these places by visiting the Museum of Local Lore. Worthy of attention is the old church, built in the second half of the 18th century. Here you can also go to the old weather station or visit the water museum.
The modern Museum of Volcanology, opened on the initiative of the famous scientist Haraldur Sigurdsson, who was born in Stykkishólmur, is also interesting.
If it is not yet possible to go to these parts, Stykkisholmur webcams, which you can watch online on this site, will allow you to enjoy magical views without leaving your own home or office.
