The expositions of the Museum of Local Lore will tell about the formation of this city and its modern realities. They are housed in an old mansion that was once owned by the wealthy merchant Chernikov.

The history of this museum dates back to 1900, when the city authorities acquired a collection of 180 stuffed birds.

Later the collection was combined with the funds of the local history museum of the real school in Melitopol. And 11 years later, the first regional museum was opened.
The collection moved to the walls of a merchant house in 1967. The building is an architectural monument of the early XX century, which was transferred from private hands to the balance of the city when the Chernikov family left for France. For a long time, this house was the headquarters of Wrangel, and later clubs worked.
During the Great Patriotic War, the mansion was chosen by the Nazis, who placed their commandant's office within its walls. After the liberation of Melitopol, the city committee of the Komsomol entered Chernikov's house. And a few years later, a savings bank was located on the first floor.
Only after completing such a long and difficult path, the building was finally transferred to the careful hands of the administration of the Museum of Local Lore.
Today the collection includes about 60 thousand storage units and continues to grow. The exhibition includes a unique collection of samples of Scythian gold dating back to the 4th century BC and discovered at the excavations of the Melitopol burial mound. The numismatic collection is also of interest, as well as the exposition of ancient household items, dishes, furniture, clothes.

It is a sandy outlier hill that originated from the Sarmatian Sea, the waters of which splashed in these places in ancient times. Subsequently, the massif succumbed to the effects of air and water.
Once there was a sanctuary, as indicated by the petroglyphs discovered by archaeologists. It is noteworthy that this object is the only sandstone outcrop in the territory of the Azov-Black Sea depression.
