Severomorsk is home to the naval base of the Russian Northern Fleet. Therefore, the city is closed, to visit it requires a special pass.
The city of Severomorsk began with the advent of the Vaenga camp, which was founded in 1896-1897 - genus and inclination. The first mentions of the local Vaenga River, which gave the name to the village on the site of the present city, are found in the manuscript "Books to the Grand Drawing." This was the name of the description of a huge map of Russian lands, compiled in the 15th century. According to one version, the name of the river came from the Sami word "vaaj" - important, which means "female deer." According to another version, the name comes from the Sami word "ouoyungga" - a magical deer. The Sami were the first to come here and, having discovered a mountain river, founded a settlement.
According to the Murmansk Regional Museum of Local History, only 13 people lived in Vaenga in 1917. Only in the 1920s began active development of the territory, and in the 1930s began the construction of a road that connected the village with Murmansk. During the same period there was an active construction of wooden and brick houses. In the pre-war period of the year, construction of a naval base and airfield in Waenga began. The Navy was replenished with naval aviation. On the eve of World War II, Vaenga turned from a Sami camp to a settlement that was of great strategic importance both for the Soviet Arctic and for the whole country.
During the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 Vaenga was a military garrison than a village. The North Seamen showed resilience and courage in defending the Soviet Arctic. In the village of Vaenga and the surrounding areas, the Northern Fleet aviation was based. From here, fighter jets flew to defend Murmansk and allied convoys, as well as bombers and torpedo carriers to attack enemy vehicles and bases of the Norwegian coast. Those who read the novel "Two Captains" easily recognize in the description of the flight base of the Waenga airfield. During the war, Benjamin Kaverin was refining a novel in the North. Also in Vaenga were based pilots of allied aviation, who helped Soviet pilots to master Western military equipment. Even during the war, the Red Fleet decided to put a monument in memory of those who did not return from a combat mission. 200,000 rubles were collected. But the Monument to Heroes-North Moroccans appeared on the embankment of the navy capital only in 1973.
After the war, the Northern residents of the village began to work peacefully. High-rise buildings, schools, a hospital and a library were built in the village.
On April 18, 1951, the Decree of the Presidency of the Supreme Council of the RUSSIAN Federation was published, which read: "To transform the working village of Vaenga, polar region, Murmansk region, into a city of regional subordination, naming it as the city of Severomorsk."
In the 1960s, the young city developed the sphere of domestic services. In the following years sausage and dairy factories and bakeries begin to work. The city of Severomorsk becomes not only a warrior city, but also a working city.
By decree of the President of the Russian Federation of November 26, 1996 No. 1606, the city of Severomorsk with adjacent settlements (Safonovo, Safonovo-1, Severomorsk-3, Shchukozero) has been transformed into a closed administrative-territorial formation of the city of Severomorsk with a length of the border of 130.5 km, of which 28.8 km passes through the tidal-tide zone of the Kola Bay and 101.7 km - on land territory.
