The first structures that appeared on the square in the early 18th century were two churches made of wood: Sviatodukhovskaya and Petropavlovskaya. The last according to legend was designed by Peter the Great. After the completion of the Alexander plant in 1777, two cathedrals were built on Kirov Square, one of them the cathedral Sviatodukhovsky, as well as two gymnasiums - women's and men's.
At different times, Kirov Square had different names. In the 18th of the year the square bore the name of the Fortress Square, in 1860 - Cathedral, in 1923 - Freedom Square, in 30 years - Labor Square, since 1944 - the square named after S. M. Kirov.
In 1956, a theatre building was built on the square by three architects: A. Maksimov, E. Chechma and S. Brodsky. The building was decorated and decorated with a mural under the direction of the academician S. Konenov. The theatre operates to this day and it features creative groups of the Musical Theatre and the Theatre of Russian Drama.
In 1965, the building, which used to be the cinema "Triumph", was rebuilt into the National Theatre. After the recent renovation, the building was built a small stage and attached several additional floors above the wings of the building. There is also a puppet theater.
