Theresienwiese is a 42-hectare open space located in the centre of Munich, in the Ludwigsforstadt-Isarforstadt district, south of the central station and 2 kilometres south-west of the centre of Munich, Marienplatz. There are various festivals and city events, such as the Munich Oktoberfest, the flea markets, where old things are sold, the winter festival "Tollwood" and others.
Meadow was named after Teresa von Saxe-Hildburghausen, wife of King Ludwig I. Their wedding took place on Theresienvis in 1810.
Today, Teresa's meadow is the largest venue in Munich for celebrations and festivals, including:
- serves as the official venue for the world's most famous and largest folk festival (beer festival) - Oktoberfest, which is held annually from the second in mid-September to the beginning of October. The holiday lasts more than two weeks. At this time, Teresa's meadow is turning into a noisy place, which is visited annually by more than 6 million people. The meadow is organized by festivities and entertainment, from the tents there is a lively trade in food, snacks, sweets, souvenirs and the nail of the festival - beer. On the meadow put large tents, in which the participants of the festival - only Munich brewing companies, sell foam drink. Beer for the holiday is brewed, among other things, and special - Oktoberfestbier (Oktoberfestbier) with alcohol content 5.8-6.3%, which at other times of the year is usually called March or Viennese. For this reason, the festival is also called the "Beer Festival";
- in winter (in December), in the run-up to Christmas and New Year, the "Tollwood" festival is held in the meadow of Teresa - a month-long festival of alternative culture and cuisine, which includes a Christmas market, and cultural events are held until the New Year. During the festival, large indoor tents are also located in the meadow, which sells dishes from different countries, drinks, including beer, and souvenirs. On the street from small tents there is a lively trade in drinks, including warming mulled wine, food (sausages, burgers, cabbage, pizza, sandwiches, etc.), snacks, sweets, food, souvenirs and Christmas goods;
- From about mid-April, teresa's meadow fills the spring festival (M'nchner Fr'hligersfest), also called "Little Oktoberfest". At the festival: two beer tents of two breweries - Augustiner and Paulaner, more than 100 attractions and show programs;
- also: a large flea market, a festival of classic cars and the Bavarian Central Agricultural Festival, which is held every four years.
