Latvia does not have a single Riga in terms of attractions and other interesting locations. Outskirts of the capital can also surprise inquisitive tourists. For example, Lychee is a village with a very rich history. You should definitely visit it for anyone who wants to understand the formation and development of the Riga region.
Also noteworthy is the area of Zadvinie, which is also called the Mitavsky suburb. This is an old location where peace and tranquility rule. Its main attraction is the two railway stations. One of them, Tornakalns, was built in 1870 in the process of developing the Port of Riga. The Riga-Boulder railway led directly to the mouth of the Western Dvina. Tornakalns himself, which was the first railway station from the Central Station in the direction of Dvina, led to Jelgava.
The second station is Zasulauks (the German name is Sassinghof). He is the same age as Tornakalns. Zasulauks was built specifically for the maintenance of the Valley and the railway leading to Konigsberg and Prussia. At the moment, this is where the main line to Jurmala and Tukums begins.
By rail from Zadvinja you can get to Čiekurkalns. This Riga suburb is not particularly presentable, but in terms of the concentration of talented personalities it can be compared to St. Petersburg Vasilievsky Island. At the beginning of the 20th century, Čiekurkalns was flooded with immigrants from the province, who opened various workshops here. Against the background of the classical buildings of the Soviet era, CHPP-1 stands out, which has long been working on peat. By the way, raw materials were mined almost next to the CHP itself. The police academy of Latvia and the campus of the Riga Technical University are located between the CHP and Kisozero.
The main architectural attraction of the Riga neighborhood can be safely called Kirch Cross. It was created at the turn of 1908-1909. in the so-called style of Latvian romanticism. It is not so easy to find the Kirch of the Cross - the object was lost in the industrial zone. It is remarkable because it was here that some scenes of “17 Moments of Spring” were filmed. In Kirche Cross, the services were performed by the famous pastor Schlag. In the film, only the exterior of the temple is visible, while the interior was the interior of the St. Paul's Church in Grizinkalns.
It is convenient to inspect the Riga suburbs not only by car, but also by train. Such
traveling will allow you to see closely the real life of the Latvians, which may not be as bright as that of the capital’s inhabitants, but is still special in its own way.
