In the past, there were a lot of pearls in the harbor. Pearl mining was the main industry in Taipou under the Han Dynasty. During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, the king of Southern Han changed the name of Taipou to Meichuentou and ordered an aggressive cultivation effort, resulting in numerous casualties among the pearl miners. Extraction continued until the Ming Dynasty, when pearl oysters almost disappeared in the area.
