Pitsunda, whose webcams are available on the site, is located in the Gagra district, 100 km from Sukhum.
It is known to many as a climatic resort, since relic pine trees are located on its territory and, in combination with the sea, form a healing microclimate.
The main attraction of the city is the Pitsunda temple. It is also called the Cathedral of St. Andrew the First-Called, because. it houses the tomb of the apostle. Saint Simon the Zealot is also buried here. The religious building is located on the territory of the historical and architectural complex "Great Pitiunt".
The first religious building appeared here in the 4th century. It was an ancient Christian basilica. Over time, the building fell into disrepair, so a new, already larger cathedral was erected on this site. Abkhazians were baptized there. Approximately in the 9th-10th centuries, when the Abkhazian kingdom was developing rapidly, it was decided to build a domed temple. It is this building that can be seen today in Pitsunda.
Webcams will allow you to enjoy the architecture of the building in real time.
The cathedral is located behind the walls of an ancient fortress. It is a three-aisled building with domes rising above it. It was the first building to have such a shape. The uniqueness of this temple is that the base of the building is built only of stone, and the rest is masonry of brick and stone. At the same time, the closer to the dome, the wider the brick becomes.
The interior decoration is no less interesting than the facade of the temple. Despite the fact that most of the frescoes were plastered or knocked off the walls, the rest are striking in their beauty. This wall painting was created in the XII-XIV centuries. It depicted six-winged cherubs, apostles and a portrait of Christ Pantokrator. The portrait and images of the apostles surrounding him are depicted in the dome and have survived to this day.
The cathedral has survived to this day in a modified form, because. it has been reconstructed and renovated several times. The last transformations took place in 1975. The cult building, which had not been used for its intended purpose for a long time, was converted into a concert hall. A German organ was installed here, and the altar part was converted into a stage.
The temple impresses with its grandeur, and enjoying organ music in it is a pleasure. Just for the sake of these emotions it is worth visiting these places.
