Ponomarevka is a small village located on the banks of the Dema River, 220 kilometers from Orenburg. The village was founded by decree of the Orenburg State Chamber in 1833. The main inhabitants of the settlement were local residents and Birsk state peasants. According to the 1834 census, 220 female souls and 203 male souls lived in the village.
Initially, Ponomarevka belonged to the Vedres-Kalmashevsky region, but in the 1840s the village was transferred to the Novo-Troitsk volost.
After the introduction of the institution of rural societies for state peasants, Ponomarevka became the largest community in the Birsk district. In addition to the inhabitants of the village itself and state peasants, the society included 30 more villages. The community was headed by a village foreman, but some settlements had their own elders, tax collectors, tenths - modern policemen.
After the separate class of state peasants was abolished in 1866, Ponomarevka became the regional center of the region of the same name. At the same time, the rural administration, reprisal and the position of foreman were also changed. The Ponomarev community was now limited to only one of its villages. State land, which was used by local peasants before the reform, passed into the possession of society. By 1895, there were 140 households in Ponomarevka, 788 people, there was a chapel, a water mill, a grain store, a horse peeling and a grocery store. At that time, there were 25 winnowing machines in the village, and more than 50 households were growing apples on their plots.
After the October Revolution, the Ponomarevsky village council was formed, but at the same time, the village retained the status of a volost center until the 1930s.
According to the 1926 census, 1026 people lived in the village. In the process of collectivization, an agricultural artel was organized in Ponomarevka. By the beginning of 1932, 243 families lived on the collective farm, 135 men, 204 women and 4 teenagers were officially employed. In the 35th year, a dairy farm was launched in the village. In 1937, an orphanage and a secondary school were opened. In the 1980s, a brick factory was put into operation. By the end of the 20th century, Ponomarevka became almost a southern suburb of Birsk.
In 2004, Ponomarevka was included in the territory of the Birsk City Council. The local village council is abolished. A few years later, the secondary school, the library and the house of culture were also abolished. According to the 2010 census, 1852 people lived directly in the village.
