The first mentions of the island can be found in the writings of Herodotus and Ptolemy. At the same time, for the first time, Dzharylgach was plotted on navigational charts by Italian navigators in the XIV-XV centuries. Then they named it "Red Island".

Legends say that Dzharylgach arose after the flooding of the Achilles Run spit. He became a salvation for Iphigenia, who was fleeing from marriage to Achilles. According to legend, the goddess Artemis saved the young priestess by pouring fine sand on the pursuer until he was tired. The island is washed by the Dzharylgach and Karkinitsky gulfs.

The north of Dzharylgach is cut by bays and spits of the bay of the same name. Here the water warms up quite quickly, so the swimming season can be opened in May, which cannot be said about the South Coast. Since it is washed by the waters of the Karkinitsky Bay (and it is deeper), a comfortable temperature is established here by June.
The most visited area of ​​the island is the lighthouses. There is a pier for boats and boats, as well as a sales point for cold drinks, snacks, seafood. Also, due to the fact that this place is narrow, you can get to the other side in a few minutes.
Today the island is a national nature park. There are rare plant species, including orchids. In the depths of Dzharylgach, you can find roe deer, mouflon, raccoon, wild boar. Many birds also nest here, including the Red Book Lepidoptera Satyr. You can get into the interior of the island as part of excursions.
