In the distant 1540, Polish king Sigismund the first, was handed a major political figure and military commander, Jan Tarnowski letter with permission to build a fortified castle on the land where he was destroyed by the Tatar-Mongols ancient Outpost. Castellan of kraków and great crown Hetman Tarnowski built a mighty fortress surrounded by a deep ditch and earthen rampart with a wooden palisade, and founded the city that today is called Ternopil is one of the major administrative centers in Western Ukraine. Ternopil castle, to get into the stout gates of which it was possible for the folding bridge across the moat outside the fortifications, had four defensive towers. However, even such strength and power did not save the fortress from multiple seizures and destruction. Of course, every time the citadel was rebuilt, but the walls of the fortress and moat to our epoch is not reached, and the castle in the NINETEENTH century was reconstructed in the Palace, in the style of Russian classicism. Ternopil, in the history of its existence, has experienced numerous destruction and fires, and was completely devastated by the Turks in the 70-ies of the XVII century, being then in ruins and disrepair for almost a century. Modern Ternopil is a cozy city and a regional centre with a unique atmosphere of the historic villages of Galicia. The city, at various times was dominated by the Austrian, Russian and Polish rulers, synthesizing in its appearance the characteristic features of these are not similar to each other countries and cultures.
