Live webcams Reykjanes - Peninsula in Iceland

Reykjanes webcams can be watched online to immerse yourself in the real atmosphere of Iceland. The nature of the Reykjanes peninsula impresses with its vast high-temperature zone with frozen hot springs and steam jets, lava fields and world-famous bird cliffs that wildlife lovers should not miss. Reykjanes is where the North Atlantic Ridge rises above the sea. Here you can find more than 100 different craters, caves, lava fields, rocks and black beaches.

Today, the peninsula is a geopark and part of the conservation program of the UNESCO Global Geopark.

It was officially certified as a Geopark at the XIII Autumn Conference of the European Geoparks Network in Finland in September 2015. In total, 55 fascinating places have been identified in the geopark. These areas are of interest because of the geological, natural and cultural history, and also play a key role in the region's annals.
It is difficult to tell about all the objects, but it is worth highlighting the most interesting ones. First of all, I would like to mention the Sulfur Mountains - these are the ridges of the tuff mountains of the late Ice Age. At the top is the Kistufell lava dock. There are several volcanic fissures with craters in the mountains. In the northern part of the Sulfur Mountains there is a high-temperature region where sulfur was discovered in the 1880s.
The next unusual place is the bridge on the plate separating Europe and America. According to geological theories, the Eurasian and North American plates are pushing against each other at Reykjanes. Plate separation is defined by volcanic bands, ruptures, and rows of craters that run from the peninsula and northeast across the country. In general, Iceland is divided between two tectonic plates. The eastern part of the country belongs to the so-called Eurasian raft, and the western part belongs to the North American one. The gap appears before us either as open cracks and crevices, or as rows of craters.

Reykjanes webcams make it possible to watch amazing landscapes online on the site that immerse you in the atmosphere of Iceland's untouched nature.

It's hard to imagine Iceland without lighthouses. They also exist on the peninsula in Gardskagi. The first records of light beacons here date back to 1847, when one of them served as a guide for sailors. The documents of that time say that in August 1847 the watchtower with a stone pillar will have a height of 15 cubits (3.7 m). In 1897 a full-fledged lighthouse was built. It was a square concrete building 12.5 m high and 3.25 m on each side. A guardhouse was attached to it, where the caretaker stayed for the night. Around the lighthouse was a platform loaded with sculpted rocks about 10 feet high. A very high-quality lighting device with an oil lamp was placed on the lighthouse. She had to finish shining every four hours, so it was considered necessary that the lighthouse keeper remained in the guardhouse at night. In later years it was not safe to stay here, so at high tide the lighthouse was guarded from the keeper's house.
The new lighthouse was built in Gardskagi in 1944. It was a cylindrical concrete tower, 28 m high. It is the highest lighthouse in the country. The lighting equipment of the old lighthouse was moved to the new lighthouse, but electric lights soon replaced the oil light, first from a wind generator and later from a suction power plant. After that, the level of illumination of the lighthouse was increased.
Hvalsnes Church, consecrated in 1887, can be called an unusual attraction. It is located on the western side of Reykjanes. It was built from wooded stone, which were picked up nearby. All timber for the house's load-bearing structures was taken from nearby beaches, including poles. Extensive renovations were carried out in 1945. The church is still in operation today and seats about 100 people. The altar is an exact copy of the Cathedral table, painted by Sigurdur Gudmundsson in 1886 and depicting the Resurrection.

Skagagardur Park is an obligatory point on the map, Reykjanes webcams allow you to watch breathtaking views of natural landscapes online on the site.

The ancient park of the peninsula is still visible northeast of Kolbeinsstadir. Presumably the history of the park begins in the X century. Now it is separated by the northern part of Rosmkhvalsness from other parts of the peninsula. The park was adjoining to the north, and tall and vertical to the south. Initially, it was intended to keep sheep away from the vast cornfields that are nearby.
